VACANCY FOR CHIEF FINANCE OFFICER

Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced Malawian candidates to fill the vacancy of Chief Finance Officer based at its Head Office in Blantyre.
The position represents an exciting challenge for a dynamic achiever with a track record of improving financial performance in a highly competitive market who is looking for an opportunity to demonstrate their financial and general management skills as a key member of the management team driving MTL in a programme of growth and change management.

MTL owns and operates a national fibre optic backbone and is the leading provider of internet and data services in Malawi, with a fixed line operation and growing CDMA and WiMAX access networks, serving both voice and data customers in the business and retail market sectors.
MTL is embarking on a rapid expansion in its customer base and revenues, addressing all sectors of the voice and data markets and is pursuing the completion of the change management process to a truly customer-focused, market-oriented company.
The position is responsible for:
  • Maintaining and improving the financial position of the company.
  • As a member of the Executive Committee, ensuring financial discipline is applied to all decisions in the company.
  • The accurate and timely posting of financial transactions.
  • The production of accurate management accounts, budgets, business plans, forecasts on a timely basis.
  • Treasury, including liaising with banks, financing institutions, vendors and customers.
  • Procurement, covering operating services & supplies, handsets, terminals & vouchers, project materials and services.
  • The Billing function, requiring close liaison with Commercial & Technical Division.
  • Stores, including operating and project materials & equipment, handsets, terminals and vouchers for resale.
The successful candidate will be:

  • Familiar with banking and financing institutions both in Malawi and internationally.
  • A successful negotiator.
  • Able to operate in the detail whilst maintaining a strategic overview.
  • A team player.
  • A leader, coach and mentor to both finance and non-finance staff.
  • A member of a professional accounting body (ICAM, ACCA, ACMA).
  • A holder of a Bachelor Degree in Accountancy or an equivalent subject.
  • Highly ethical.
  • Professional.
The successful candidate will have:
  • A track record of increasing profitability.
  • A flexible, pragmatic but focused approach.
  • The desire to make a difference.
  • A minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years in a senior financial role in a commercial company of c.500+ employees, preferably in the telecommunications sector.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the postholder is a member of the Executive Committee.
